A Hope Filled New Year

My Friends,
Does it seem to you that uncertainty comes too easily to our world, that uncertainty is too much a part of our lives? The uncertainty about our health, our jobs, about our grades in school, about our sense of personal well-being, about our future and our hope – it’s as if we each have an ‘uncertainty of the month’ calendar for 2012.

We need to find a center of certainty for our lives. Listen to the words of Isaiah: “Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning?
He brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. “To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal,” says the Holy One.

Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created these?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. (Isaiah 40:21ff)

God is the center of our certainty. God created you and me, knows all about us, and loves us completely. This is the good news in Jesus Christ of which we can be very certain.
And because I am very certain about that, I believe that God has a plan for you and me and First Presbyterian Church. Our faith fills us with the power of God’s future, so we look forward…we expect something to happen…we anticipate.

As Stanley Ott said, “To anticipate is to have a reason to set your heart on the future.”
This congregation has much to anticipate in 2012. We will set our hearts on God’s plans for us that make a difference in our lives and in the lives of so many other people in this community and in the world. We will work together so that we may plan ministries both now and for the
future that reflect God’s will for all of us as disciples of Jesus Christ.
I hope you will share my excitement in the coming year, because I am certain that God is getting ready to do some surprisingly wonderful thing in us and through us.

More than wishing you a “Happy New Year”, I pray for you a “Hope-filled New Year”.
Thanks and blessings – Bruce Lancaster
